The 2011 Directors Breakfast discussed  “Strategy and the Board” with a keynote address by Gene Tilbrook.

Below is an overview of the seminar taken from the AICD media release:

Effective corporate strategies and plans are fundamental to sustainable business success. Yet all too often they are considered “for other/bigger/more complex businesses” or are produced to a formula and shelved until the next year.

A sound strategy is fundamental to success and plays a key role in engagement between board and senior management which differs considerably from budgets and financial reports.

Gene Tilbrook discussed the fundamentals of effective strategic processes with a focus on the development role of the board and the measurement of performance against strategic goals.

Drawing examples from a range of industries and businesses of all sizes, Gene considers the following issues:

  • Alternative methodologies for strategic planning
  • Planning within the board reporting cycle
  • Linking strategy to performance
  • Sustainability through strategy
  • Information (technology) within the strategic process
